The Britt
955 Bay Street, Toronto
Originally the renowned Sutton Place Hotel, The Britt is one of the most complex examples of adaptive re-use that we have undertaken. This hotel-to-residential conversion required extensive testing and planning to ensure the existing 32-storey structure could accommodate 12 additional levels framed in structural steel, complemented by an enlarged podium to the east.
This project began with digitizing the original structural drawings from the 1960s. Ensuring the existing foundations and walls could support the additional floors and new balconies was a critical part of the redevelopment - carbon fiber reinforcing was used extensively throughout the existing hotel structure to increase strength and stiffness.
A new 9-storey concrete podium on the east side of the tower stabilizes the structure and provides amenity space for the building’s residents.
