Colossus
3555 Highway 7 West, Vaughan
Unique buildings are a memorable way to leave an impact. The ‘flying saucer’ that forms the central roof of Colossus makes it one of the most recognizable buildings in the northern GTA.
The structural frame of the spaceship consists of five major steel trusses with a combination of steel purlins and precast concrete elements. Inside the building, the underside of the spaceship forms a large dome on top of the circular entrance area. At the entrance area’s centre, directly beneath the dome, a 2-storey structure houses a feature bar (the first fully-licensed bar in a movie theatre in Canada) on the upper level and concession stands at ground level.
The building’s north and south wings each contain 9 regular cinemas with an IMAX theatre on the east side of the central entrance area. The roof of the cinema wings was designed to reduce vibrations in the structure: additional ballast in the form of gravel absorbs vibrations from digital surround sound systems.
