Mid-Rise
Buildings: Mid-Rise
The definition of “mid-rise” varies from city to city but generally includes buildings 4-10 storeys in height. Mid-rise buildings often appear as infill or in multi-phased developments. Due to their locations, they often have complex geometry and extensive terracing to avoid casting shadows on adjacent parks, roads, and residences.

MID-RISE BUILDINGS
Design Challenges
The complex geometry and terracing of these buildings can present a challenge for designing structures that can be constructed simply, quickly, and economically. Mixed-use occupancies that include businesses like grocery stores or medical offices – which often occupy lower-floor space in mid-rise buildings – may require specialized structural design, in addition to the residential units that also occupy these buildings. At Jablonsky, we have developed numerous framing solutions to deal with the challenges of mid-rise design.

MID-RISE BUILDINGS
Materials
Traditionally, mid-rise buildings were constructed of cast-in-place concrete, but recently there has been a shift to explore other construction materials such as total precast, steel and proprietary steel systems, timber framing, and modular construction.
