Applied Knowledge Expertise: BIM Management

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a workflow that manages and analyzes project data on digital platforms from the initial design phase to long-term building management. The ability to visualize a building’s design in a virtual 3D model helps to determine and resolve conflicts between the structure and other building systems before construction begins. During construction, our field inspectors use the virtual model to flag potential site issues before they even go to site. We conduct ongoing research in BIM technology to develop custom tools and improve our internal and collaborative workflows.

Model Coordination

Since the 1950s when our office opened, the exchange of information between engineers and architects has evolved from couriering hand-drawn blueprints to file transfer in shared online locations. 3D models are particularly useful for coordinating with other consultants to ensure that the building’s structure effectively interacts with building systems and finishes. Tracked design changes on a shared model allow for immediate identification of potential conflicts and helps to avoid miscommunications that can lead to costly delays.

Material Estimates and Takeoffs

3D models can also be used to calculate the quantity of construction materials, including concrete, formwork areas, and steel. In early planning stages this can help clients develop their budgets effectively and manage embodied carbon.
